Well-Known Actors Lead Set Apart

A Movie with a Purpose
So how do real-life ministries become a movie? Brad Wilson of Hemisphere Productions heard Randy and Heidi Gunn perform with their band GunnPoint at a Christian music festival. Hemisphere had just launched a new production arm called Power In Faith that was looking for ideas for great faith-based films.

After learning more about GunnPoint and its familial connection to the Power Company Kids Club, Power In Faith was intrigued. The potential for a film about the interaction of these two remarkable ministries could provide the material needed for an exciting and inspiring family film.

"The story they wanted to tell involved taking some troubled kids from the inner city and having us teach them the 'Cowboy Way,'" Randy says. "I told them about my brother John's ministry—the Power Company Kids Club—and what they do in the inner city."

From there, George Flynn, who has served with Randy and Heidi Gunn for years, wrote the script that became Set Apart. Now, the work of both ministries is about to be highlighted to movie fans everywhere!

I connected to the story because as a child I was able to attend the New York Worlds Fair.

Karen Kingsbury weaves an intriguing story while reminding us that we will not be remembered for out wins and losses, but for what we make of our lives between Sundays.

In this first book of the Sisters of Homes County series, Grace Hostettler, a young Amish girl, has returned to her Amish roots and community after her “running around years.” She seems eager to settle back into Amish life and even agree to marry Cleon Schrock, a fine Amish gentlemen. But when a newspaper reporter shows up in their community and begins asking questions as well as some acts of violence against the Hostettler family, Grace if faced with some of the events of her past. The theme of this book is forgiveness, both on the part of Grace’s family and even for Grace herself.

A good fiction read for teen through adult.

I never allow my children to watch R-rated movies, after all, I know what to expect-vulgar language, sexually explicit scenes, and in the case of horror movies, buckets and buckets of blood. So when I was asked to review the movie House, adapted from a book written by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker--a Christian R-rated movie-an oxymoron? I was very curious. First off, what could possible be in it that mandated the restricted rating? The movie does not contain foul language, nudity or drug abuse…but violence? Well, it depends on how you define violence.

The violence in House never rises to the level of that found in the "Saw" franchise with its graphic torture and sickening brutality, but the continuous jump scenes and run for your life scenarios do keep you on the edge of your seat, and may prove to be far too intense for younger children, or even older ones that don’t like to be scared.

The movie begins with a murder in a house (not graphically shown) as a foreshadow of things to come. In the next scene we are introduced to Jack (Reynaldo Rosales) and Stephanie (Heidi Dippold) a couple struggling in their marriage after the tragic death of their daughter. After a car accident the two end up seeking refuge from the rain at Wayside Inn, also know as a big scary house. They meet another couple staying at the Inn, Leslie (Julie Ann Emery) and Randy (J.P. Davis) who are lovers, and by coincidence also had car issues. Since there are no working phones, cellular or land, to call road service, the three creepy innkeepers offer them respite for the night.

Eventually the house traps the group inside forcing them to run for their lives from a killer called Tin Man and the innkeepers. Tin Man’s twisted game demands one dead body before sunrise in order to redeem the others. Meanwhile the house taunts each person by dredging up past sins in disturbing and poignant ways. Leslie has bitterness regarding sexual abuse in her childhood; Randy has hatred toward his father; Jack and Stephanie deal with both guilt and blame regarding the death of their child.

The four start to turn on each other despite the voice of reason introduced by a child named Susan, who tells them, “He (The Enemy) is a liar, and he breaks his own rules. You don’t have to listen to him.” And ”The light overcomes the darkness,” Eventually Jack and Stephanie repent of past mistakes, each offering his or her own life for the sacrifice.

**Spoiler Alert**
Susan ends up laying down her life in Christ-like fashion-minus the cross, and saves Jack and Stephanie, the two remaining survivors. In a surprise ending, not found in the book, Stephanie and Jack return to the scene of the car accident where they learn all four of them have actually died, and were living in their own personal hells. Since Jack and Stephanie found “the way” as taught by the Christ figure, who by the way is resurrected, their lives were spared and they return to their bodies, unlike the other unrepentant couple that burned up in the car accident.

Cinematography
The film itself is very impressive thanks to veteran director Robby Henson’s interpretation of the book. The actors were amazing, especially the female innkeeper played by Leslie Easterbrook. If there were Christian academy awards for creepy portrayals, she’d win hands-down. The visuals and special effects were just what you’d expect in a horror movie, and the background music was fantastic. The only technical complaint I have is the voice quality. I had to replay a few scenes on my advance DVD copy in order to figure out what was said. Overall though the movie is a contender with anything else you find in the suspense/horror genre, but again, nowhere near as graphic.

Parent’s Choice
Now the question remains, would I allow my children to see this R-rated movie? It really depends upon the child. One of my children loves to be scared, the other not at all. Is there a redeeming message in House? Absolutely. All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. We are all guilty and deserve death. The lifestyle of fornication and murder chosen by Leslie and Randy led to their eventual death. And the only hope is to reach out for the truth found in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are shown that evil is really bad, yet can be overcome by the light of God. Was all that actually “said” in the movie, well no.

My friend commented that she wouldn’t know House was a Christian movie unless someone had told her. I think that’s a good thing. Sure there are times for overt preaching like that found in Left Behind or Fireproof, but if we want to reach a fallen culture we might just have to take the advice of Jesus who told his disciples, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” In case you haven’t looked up the definition of shrewd lately it means, “keen” or “piercing”. And that’s just what House is. A movie that pierces the heart and mind, forcing viewers to think about the afterlife--and what House they’ll end up in.

Help Author Randy Singer pick the ending to his next Court Room Thriller!

At the conference I attended I got the honor of sitting next to Author/Pastor/Lawyer Randy Singer at breakfast one of the mornings. He gave my table an inside look at this life and his newest book "The Justice Game." Randy's wife and children attended a school that had a similar Columbine experience about 6 years ago. The teen entered the school with intent to kill. He went to the Bible class and tried to open fire on the students that were huddle in the corner of the room. Praise God his gun jammed and allowed the Bible teacher the opportunity to tackle him. Randy was a lawyer in the case that tryed the teenager. His fans and following have been bugging him to right a book about the issue and although he couldn't bring himself to write about that specific event he wrote a book that dealt with the same topic of Gun Control. There is Freedom From Pornography

As you all know this is a hard issue to discuss in the Christian realm, it is a topic that has become a big problem in our Christian communities. It is about time we step up and take a stand! During the conference I was at in September, Ted Cunningham got up and introduced this line of resources to all the bookstore owners. During his presentation of some of the statistics one of the bookstore owners shared that his brother is the manager at a hotel and the pay-per-view adult video charges are the highest during pastor conferences and Christian Men's retreats. This just highlights how much of an issue this has become. This resource extends to women and even talks about the issue of lust and how detrimental that can be to relationships. Since these items will be hard to sell the individuals Ted recommended the 3 M's (Men for their friends, Moms and Ministry). Most men know of a friend who struggles with this issue (50% of Christian men are addicted to porn). Moms need to talk to their kids about this (12 to 17 year olds are the largest consumers of Internet pornography). Ministries can use these resources to start small groups within their churches and most of the time can speak from experience (7 of 10 lay leaders in the church admitted to visiting adult Web sites at least once a week).

I am so excited about this new product from Zondervan. I will probably be my own best customer! Basically you will now be able to purchase electronic books. There are two different versions:

1) eBook (Actually has the text of the book that you can download onto your computer or eBook reader and read. The Sony Reader we will be carrying at Pathway will hold as many as 2,000 eBooks. Can you imagine having 2,000 books on a 3 x 5 device!)
2) Audio Book (Typical audio book but you download it and since there are no CDs the price is significally less. These audio books will cost about the price of a soft cover book that is about a 50% decrease in price.)

At its introduction coming this fall, Zondervan has partnered with Baker Publishing to release a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction titles. Zondervan is currently in negotiation with the other big publishers across the industry and are planning to release a plethera of other titles in January of 2009.

Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament

I am praying this will be the biggest gift item this Christmas Season. Thomas Nelson has come out the youth edition of the Word of Promise. For this youth edition they decided to go with the International Children's Bible (ICB) translation to make it a little more friendly to youth. Nelson came up with a great cast of characters including; Corbin Bleu, Jordin Sparks, Alyson Stoner, Emily Osment, Cody Linley, Jenna Lucado and many more. This Audio Bible will be available in both MP3 and CD. The release date is planned for November 4th, but don't hesitate to call the store to reserve your copy!

The MP3 version will run about $35 and the CD version will run about $50, it you think this is high just think about how much you would spend for a video game...and would you rather they be spending time playing their Wii or listening to the Bible!

NLT Study Bible
The newest Study Bible from Tyndale House Publishers since the Life Application Study Bible, and I think this one will have just as big of an impact (if not better). At a conference I went to the beginning of September I got a brief training on this Bible and since have been doing some research and study of my own. I give this Bible 5-stars! It is a large Bible I do have to confess, but it is well worth the arm ache you get from carrying it around. ESV Study Bible

I have not seen this Bible in person (other than for about 2 minutes at the conference I was at in September), but Crossway sent us a 15 minute training DVD that I sat down and watched.
